(Exodus 23:3) nor shall you be partial to a poor man in his dispute."
(Exodus 23:6) “You shall not pervert the justice due to your needy brother in his dispute.
(Exodus 23:9) “You shall not oppress a stranger, since you yourselves know the feelings of a stranger, for you also were strangers in the land of Egypt.
(Exodus 23:12) “Six days you are to do your work, but on the seventh day you shall cease from labor so that your ox and your donkey may rest, and the son of your female slave, as well as your stranger, may refresh themselves.
(Deuteronomy 24:17-18) “You shall not pervert the justice due an alien or an orphan, nor take a widow’s garment in pledge. 18 But you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and that the Lord your God redeemed you from there; therefore I am commanding you to do this thing.
(Deuteronomy 27:18-19) ‘Cursed is he who misleads a blind person on the road.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
19 ‘Cursed is he who distorts the justice due an alien, orphan, and widow.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
(Deuteronomy 27:24-26) ‘Cursed is he who strikes his neighbor in secret.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
25 ‘Cursed is he who accepts a bribe to strike down an innocent person.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
26 ‘Cursed is he who does not confirm the words of this law by doing them.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’
Reminder: "praying effectively" involves knowing God's will. When we pray in His will (in His name), He may choose to not answer those prayers in the time period that we would like, or HOW we would like - but He will answer those prayers!
It is God's will:
- that we allow servants to rest from their labors
- that we are not mean to the vulnerable or disabled
- that we do not hit anyone, even in secret
- that we do not wrong, hurt or oppress the vulnerable
- that we do not take advantage of the vulnerable
- that we are fair to the poor in the court system
- that we do not pervert justice to take advantage of anyone
- that we do not take a bribe
- that we are to be obedient to the laws
Today's prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus, help me to be more empathetic to the poor, the weak and the vulnerable. Give me the courage and the right words in order to stand up to those who bully and torment others.
Let the justice system be fair to those who are unjustly accused. Let the injustices be revealed and dealt with appropriately. Amen.
