JESUS and Strength (Judges 13-16)

We get to a section of Judges with another interesting event that parallels Jesus' birth to a certain extent...

(Judges 13:1-5)  Now the sons of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord, so that the Lord gave them into the hands of the Philistines forty years.  There was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren and had borne no children. Then the angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her, “Behold now, you are barren and have borne no children, but you shall conceive and give birth to a son. Now therefore, be careful not to drink wine or strong drink, nor eat any unclean thing. For behold, you shall conceive and give birth to a son, and no razor shall come upon his head, for the boy shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb; and he shall begin to deliver Israel from the hands of the Philistines.”

Another woman unable to conceive, until God changes that.  Maybe giving us some earthly examples of how He controls everything, including our wombs????  (Therefore in the future, with a virtin birth - it would not be so difficult to believe that God could do that???)

Now the baby, Samson, was going to be an archetype... ALMOST an anti-type of Jesus... because Samson was NOT going to be perfect.  But he was going to help deliver Israel from some enemies.  Now, in this event, Jesus of the Old Testament does manifest Himself as a man, as it says in...

(Judges 13:9-10)  ...the angel of God came again to the woman as she was sitting in the field, but Manoah her husband was not with her. 10 So the woman ran quickly and told her husband, “Behold, the man who came the other day has appeared to me.”

And then, after THE angel of the LORD finished the discussion with the couple...

(Judges 13:19-20)  ...Manoah took the young goat with the grain offering and offered it on the rock to the Lord, and He performed wonders while Manoah and his wife looked on.  20 For it came about when the flame went up from the altar toward heaven, that the angel of the Lord ascended in the flame of the altar.  When Manoah and his wife saw this, they fell on their faces to the ground.  21 Now the angel of the Lord did not appear to Manoah or his wife again. Then Manoah knew that He was the angel of the Lord. 22 So Manoah said to his wife, “We will surely die, for we have seen God.”   23 But his wife said to him, “If the Lord had desired to kill us, He would not have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering from our hands, nor would He have shown us all these things, nor would He have let us hear things like this at this time.”

So no matter how the LORD chose to show Himself throughout the Old Testament times, He definitely did manifest Himself as a "man" a few times.  The husband felt the dread of this, but the wife had faith and trusted God in this.  Then they had their son, Samson who grew up to be a Nazarene as promised.

Wow... Samson...  we see throughout the Bible that God can use people who are far from perfect.  After Samson finds himself blind and in a bad predicament, he cries out to God...

(Judges 16:28-30)  Then Samson called to the Lord and said, “O Lord God, please remember me and please strengthen me just this time, O God, that I may at once be avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.” 29 Samson grasped the two middle pillars on which the house rested, and braced himself against them, the one with his right hand and the other with his left. 30 And Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines!” And he bent with all his might so that the house fell on the lords and all the people who were in it. So the dead whom he killed at his death were more than those whom he killed in his life.

Samson gave his life in order to give the Israelites some victory over the Philistines.  But nothing compared to what God would do in the flesh when He gave up his life to pay for all sins!  The God who gave Samson that insane amount of strength - wants to strengthen us.  We just have to remember to ask.

Apostle Paul, formerly Saul who had been on a mission to persecute and kill Christians - talks about his old credentials verses his new credentials in Christ...

(Philippians 3:4-)  I myself might have confidence even in the flesh. If anyone else has a mind to put confidence in the flesh, I far more: circumcised the eighth day, of the nation of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the Law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to the righteousness which is in the Law, found blameless.
But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ, and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith, 10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death; 11 in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.
12 Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus. 13 Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I doforgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, 14 press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. 15 Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, have this attitude; and if in anything you have a different attitude, God will reveal that also to you; 16 however, let us keep living by that same standard to which we have attained.
And the Bible gives as an example of how to think, as Paul did, regarding strength...

(2 Corinthians 12:7-10)  Because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me—to keep me from exalting myself! Concerning this I implored the Lord three times that it might leave me. And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 10 Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.
