JESUS and David's Reputation (2 Sam.8-19)

In one particular circumstance, Mephibosheth pleads for mercy to king David.

(2 Samuel 19:27)  ..."Moreover, he has slandered your servant to my lord the king; but my lord the king is like the angel of God, therefore do what is good in your sight..."

Back when David became king, he searched for any family members of king Saul's, in order to make sure they were properly taken care of - for his best friend Jonathan's sake - and found his son Mephibosheth, grandson of king Saul.  Being lame in both feet, when Mephibosheth heard that David wanted to take care of him,..

(2 Samuel 9:6-8)  Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan the son of Saul, came to David and fell on his face and prostrated himself. And David said, “Mephibosheth.” And he said, “Here is your servant!” David said to him, “Do not fear, for I will surely show kindness to you for the sake of your father Jonathan, and will restore to you all the and of your grandfather Saul; and you shall eat at my table regularly.”  Again he prostrated himself and said, “What is your servant, that you should regard a dead dog like me?”

King David had tried to be kind to other relatives, but was treated with contempt.  Nonetheless, David had tried to do what was right.  So for Mephibosheth to say that David was LIKE the angel of God - was essentially like saying - David was Christ-like. To be like Jesus... caring... treating others as you want to be treated... We already know that David was a man after God's own heart, so it should be no surprise that he had the attributes of what is expected of Christians.  Let us be like David who tried to be more like Jesus.

(Philippians 2:1-13)  Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves;do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.  12 So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.
(John 13:35)  "By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
