eschatology, Prince of Peace (Is.6-9)

Isaiah has a vision where he is standing before God.  In chapter 6, verses 9-10, we see an allegory concept that Jesus used in His teachings here on earth.  Then in verse 11, we see Isaiah ask a classic question that we humans love to ask, "How long???"  (Like - "Are we there yet???")  Isaiah wanted to know when the Israelites WOULD want to return to the Lord to be healed...

(Isaiah 6:9-)  Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I. Send me!” He said, “Go, and tell this people:
‘Keep on listening, but do not perceive;
Keep on looking, but do not understand.’
10 Render the hearts of this people insensitive,
Their ears dull,
And their eyes dim,
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
Hear with their ears,
Understand with their hearts,
And return and be healed.”
11 Then I said, “Lord, how long?” And He answered,
“Until cities are devastated and without inhabitant,
Houses are without people
And the land is utterly desolate,
12 “The Lord has removed men far away,
And the forsaken places are many in the midst of the land.
13 “Yet there will be a tenth portion in it,
And it will again be subject to burning,
Like a terebinth or an oak
Whose stump remains when it is felled.
The holy seed is its stump.”

The last verses here describe the events during the Babylonian captivity, but as God has promised, descendants from all twelve tribes of Israel would see the fulfillment of the covenants, and so representatives from all twelve tribes need to always be preserved.

REMEMBER:  The Abrahamic covenant promised land, seed, blessing, and through the Israelites all the nations would be blessed (salvation made possible through Jesus).  And the Davidic covenant promised that through king David's seed (descendants) his kingdom would be eternal (requiring a perfect and obedient King to sit on the throne, that being Jesus),

Therefore, in verse 14, there is given a twofold prophecy.  It referred to the current events back then when Isaiah, after being a widower, eventually took a young virgin as his wife and they had a child together - and that is when the two countries would be devastated.  But this sign is also a reference to Jesus' first coming - in order to answer the bigger question of "How Long"...

(Isaiah 7:10-16)  Then the Lord spoke again to Ahaz, saying, 11 “Ask a sign for yourself from the Lord your God; make it deep as Sheol or high as heaven.”  12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, nor will I test the Lord!” 13 Then he said, “Listen now, O house of David! Is it too slight a thing for you to try the patience of men, that you will try the patience of my God as well?  14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.  15 He will eat curds and honey at the time He knows enough to refuse evil and choose good. 16 For before the boy will know enough to refuse evil and choose good, the land whose two kings you dread will be forsaken.

Isaiah understood that this prophecy meant much more, and was applicable to more than just their current situation, as he says later in 8:14-18...

 (Isaiah 8:13-22)  “It is the Lord of hosts whom you should regard as holy.  And He shall be your fear, And He shall be your dread.
14 “Then He shall become a sanctuary; But to both the houses of Israel, a stone to strike and a rock to stumble over,
And a snare and a trap for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
15 “Many will stumble over them,
Then they will fall and be broken;
They will even be snared and caught.”
16 Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples. 17 And I will wait for the Lord who is hiding His face from the house of Jacob; I will even look eagerly for Him. 18 Behold, I and the children whom the Lord has given me are for signs and wonders in Israel from the Lord of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion.
19 When they say to you, “Consult the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter,” should not a people consult their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living? 20 To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn. 21 They will pass through the land hard-pressed and famished, and it will turn out that when they are hungry, they will be enraged and curse their king and their God as they face upward.  22 Then they will look to the earth, and behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish; and they will be driven away into darkness.

Through the Holy Spirit, Jesus would be born through a virgin.  God in flesh!  This is so critical to know and believe, because this would be the only possible way that Jesus (fully God) could also be fully man (at the same time).  Who else could have experienced what mankind experiences, yet live a perfect life?  Who else could have died in our place and paid for all sin, yet rise again in victory?  Who else could be a legitimate descendant of king David in line for the throne, yet rule in perfect obedience with God?

Now because Israel rejected their King (their Messiah) the first time He came, they will have to wait for Him to return again at the end of the Tribulation.  Jesus will then fulfill all covenants in the Millennium (note in verse 6 the reference to the prophecy of Jesus' birth in order to fulfill all these things)...

(Isaiah 9:1-7)  But there will be no more gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He treated the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He shall make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles.
The people who walk in darkness
Will see a great light;
Those who live in a dark land,
The light will shine on them.
You shall multiply the nation,
You shall increase their gladness;
They will be glad in Your presence
As with the gladness of harvest,
As men rejoice when they divide the spoil.
For You shall break the yoke of their burden and the staff on their shoulders,
The rod of their oppressor, as at the battle of Midian.
For every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult,
And cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire.
For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us;
And the government will rest on His shoulders;
And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace,
On the throne of David and over his kingdom,
To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness
From then on and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.

Today's takeaway:  Just as Mary said when she found out that she was to be pregnant with the Savior of the world, "For nothing will be impossible with God!"  Mary was a believer, but certainly was not perfect.  She provided the "human" entity of Jesus.  Remember, Jesus is part of the Trinity!  Jesus is God (John 1:1-14).  God created the universe!  If one just looks at and considers creation - one can see and know that there is an all-powerful God!  And He loves us!!!  And wants a personal relationship with us!!!  Because of the work on the cross - we can go directly to God as our perfect, heavenly Father - for anything!  We should not underestimate His power and love, but trust in Him in order that we might experience true confidence and peace in our lives...

(Matthew 6:25-33)  “For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on.  Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? 27 And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life? 28 And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, 29 yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! 31 Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ 32 For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
