As Daniel was praying for the sins of his people (the Israelites), the angel Gabriel came to him with a message, and within this message was given the time allotted until the Messiah will come to sit on the throne and fulfill the Abraham (and Davidic) covenant/s...
(Daniel 9:24-27) “..Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy place. 25 So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be built again, with plaza and moat, even in times of distress. 26 Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined. 27 And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate...”
"A week" is a period of seven years. And these years are most likely "prophetic years" which have 360 days in each year. When you use prophetic years - it works out to the day, that when the Messiah was "cut off" - when the Israelites rejected Him as King and crucified Him - there are 7 years left. We do not know when those 7 years of the Tribulation will start up, but the Israelites are still waiting for that to happen - THEN they will see their "signs" and at the end of the Tribulation, their Messiah will come (again) to fulfill their covenant, and the Israelites will follow Jesus in obedience.
Meanwhile, as the message above states, within that time frame, there has already been made available to all people - "atonement for iniquity - to bring in everlasting righteousness" because of Jesus' work on the cross!!! When we become Christians, because of Jesus, we are saved!
(Romans 5:6-11) For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. 11 And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
