JESUS, His Purpose and Glory (Matt.16-17)

Jesus asked the disciples who they thought He was...

(Matthew 16:16-19)  Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven...

Here, Peter had the insight, and Jesus commended Peter and told him that God would use him to establish the church (FYI - the keys to the kingdom of heaven is NOT about heaven itself and the pearly gates, but rather the keys to Christendom.  Again - to help establish God's Church).

And right after this, Jesus tells the disciples about His main purpose for being there...

(Matthew 16:21-23)  From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day. 22 Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You.” 23 But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.”

Hm, how often do we think we know better, and question God's will for us?  How often do we think we should take matters into our own hands because God's way maybe doesn't make sense to us?  It seems like Peter got way ahead of himself really fast.  Remember, Peter had been a Zealot - a Jew who wanted to get their land back from the Romans by human force.  So Jesus follows this discussion with...

(Matthew 16:24-18)  Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. 25 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and will then repay every man according to his deeds.  28 “Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”

Remember the Abraham covenant.  Jesus was going to give a few of the disciples a sneak-peek into the Millennial kingdom...

(Matthew 17:1-8)  Six days later Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, I will make three tabernacles here, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice out of the cloud said, This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell face down to the ground and were terrified. And Jesus came to them and touched them and said, “Get up, and do not be afraid.” And lifting up their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus Himself alone.

I almost want to laugh.  Peter was a take-charge-kind-of-guy, always getting ahead of himself, which is a good thing WHEN and AS he learned to let God use him and work through him - this is exactly what was needed to establish the Church.  Everything we do and say should be through God's strength and guidance, and everything we do and say should give Him the glory - for God is the Judge and determines who enters heaven...

(1 Peter 4:1-11)  Therefore, since Christ has suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, so as to live the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for the lusts of men, but for the will of God. For the time already past is sufficient for you to have carried out the desire of the Gentiles, having pursued a course of sensuality, lusts, drunkenness, carousing, drinking parties and abominable idolatries. 4 In all this, they are surprised that you do not run with them into the same excesses of dissipation, and they malign you; but they will give account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. For the gospel has for this purpose been preached even to those who are dead, that though they are judged in the flesh as men, they may live in the spirit according to the will of God.  The end of all things is near; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer. Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without complaint. 10 As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 11 Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christto whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
