JESUS the Messiah has Come (Matt.2)

I find this portion of scripture very interesting...

(Matthew 2:1-6)  Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.” When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for this is what has been written by the prophet:
And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah,
Are by no means least among the leaders of Judah;
For out of you shall come forth a Ruler
Who will shepherd My people Israel.’”

What we see here is - first - that scholars from another country KNEW about the Messiah, and I would even venture to say that they were waiting for God to appear!  I would venture to say that they were already believers, because when they saw the sign (the star), they were excited enough about this that they traveled a very long distance, with expensive gifts, in order to see Him and worship Him.  They were THAT sure, and they were THAT spiritually, emotionally and physically invested in this good news!

Then we see - the religious leaders of Israel (the chief priests and scribes) getting wind of the news, and passing along information they knew about from the scriptures - BUT - they stayed put.  There doesn't seem to be any excitement among them.  Even though they knew the prophecies that their Messiah would be coming soon.  They knew about their Messiah being able to bring about the kingdom of heaven and fulfill the Abrahamic and Davidic covenants.  They knew of all the historical moments when the nation obeyed God, and how God delivered them and blessed them as a nation.  Why then did they not run to Him as soon as they heard the great news?

We know that God is fair and just.  He would never deny salvation to anyone who wanted it...

(1 Timothy 2:1-4)  First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth

Paul explains the above another way...

(Romans 11:1-15)  I say then, God has not rejected His people, has He? May it never be! For I too am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected His people whom He foreknew. Or do you not know what the Scripture says in the passage about Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel? “Lord, they have killed Your prophets, they have torn down Your altars, and I alone am left, and they are seeking my life.” But what is the divine response to him? “have kept for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” In the same way then, there has also come to be at the present time a remnant according to God’s [c]gracious choice. But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace is no longer grace.
What then? What Israel is seeking, it has not obtained, but those who were chosen obtained it, and the rest were hardened; just as it is written,
God gave them a spirit of stupor,
Eyes to see not and ears to hear not,
Down to this very day.”
And David says,
Let their table become a snare and a trap,
And a stumbling block and a retribution to them.
10 Let their eyes be darkened to see not,
And bend their backs forever.”
11 I say then, they did not stumble so as to fall, did they? May it never be! But by their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, to make them jealous. 12 Now if their transgression is riches for the world and their failure is riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their fulfillment be! 13 But I am speaking to you who are Gentiles. Inasmuch then as I am an apostle of Gentiles, I magnify my ministry, 14 if somehow I might move to jealousy my fellow countrymen and save some of them. 15 For if their rejection is the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?
