praying effectively: Stop Trying to Conquer the World (Ps.46)

(Psalm 46:1-11)
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change and though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea;
Though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains quake at its swelling pride. Selah.
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy dwelling places of the Most High.
God is in the midst of her, she will not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns.
The nations made an uproar, the kingdoms tottered; He raised His voice, the earth melted.
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah.
Come, behold the works of the Lordwho has wrought desolations in the earth.
He makes wars to cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariots with fire.
10 Cease striving and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
11 The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah.

Reminder:  "praying effectively" involves knowing God's will.  When we pray in His will (in His name), He may choose to not answer those prayers in the time period that we would like, or HOW we would like - but He will answer those prayers!

It is God's will:
- that we stop trying to conquer the world and know that the Lord is God (46:10)
- that we notice the mighty things the Lord can do on earth (46:8)
- that we are not afraid when the earth goes through changes (46:2)

Today's prayer:

Dear Lord Jesus, help me remember the priorities in life.  Success is not about what kind of job I have, or how much money I make, or how much power I have... it is all about putting You first in my life and living in Your will.

I know I'm deluding myself when I even think that I can control the things happening right around me, never mind the huge global things.  Help me cease from worries and futile attempts to strive for control.  I want You to be Lord of my life and the things around me.  Thank You for the reminder that You are over everything, big or small.  Amen.
