praying effectively: Put Your Confidence in God (Ps.78)

(Psalm 78:1-8)
Listen, O my people, to my instruction; incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings of old,
Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.
We will not conceal them from their children, but tell to the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and His strength and His wondrous works that He has done.
For He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers that they should teach them to their children,
That the generation to come might know, even the children yet to be born, that they may arise and tell them to their children,
That they should put their confidence in God and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments,
And not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that did not prepare its heart and whose spirit was not faithful to God.
Reminder:  "praying effectively" involves knowing God's will.  When we pray in His will (in His name), He may choose to not answer those prayers in the time period that we would like, or HOW we would like - but He will answer those prayers!

It is God's will:
- that we favor and listen to biblical instructions (78:1)
- that we pass along and teach God's works, praises and instructions (78:1)
- that the Israelites should pass along and teach God's laws (78:4-6)
- that the Israelites should not forget God and what He has done (78:7)
- that the Israelites should keep God's commandments (78:7)
- that the Israelites should put their confidence in God (78:7)
- that the Israelites should not be like their stubborn, rebellious ancestors (78:8)
- that the Israelites should prepare their hearts and remain faithful (78:8)

Today's prayer:

Dear Lord Jesus, thank You for giving us Your written word - so that we may use the Bible to study and teach our children and the next generations.  Thank You for giving us Your written word - so that we will not forget Your commandments and instructions!  Thank You for giving us your written word - so that we can have a record of the many wondrous works that You have done.  Because we can see Your faithfulness throughout history, we can trust You in what You will do now and in the future.  Convict and prepare the hearts of the Israelites to turn back to You.  Amen.
