eschatology, Descendant of David, Son of God (Rom.1-4)

As I started reading the book of Romans today, I then had to quickly look at all the other books (letters) that had been written by apostle Paul, to compare his opening salutations.  My immediate observation was correct!  Romans is the only letter where in the salutation itself, Paul quickly establishes the fact that Jesus, while on earth, was both 100% man and 100% God - a legitimate descendant of king David - and the prophecies and His resurrection are proof of His deity...

(Romans 1:1-5)  Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh, who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for His name’s sake, among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ...

Just as it was with Jesus, Paul established the fact that his priority was always to speak to the Jews first, and then the Gentiles.  This makes sense after reading through the Old Testament and seeing all the promises God has made (good and bad) regarding the nation of Israel.  They were promised blessings through the Abrahamic and Davidic covenants and chosen to be God's light to the world;  but when they were and are disobedient, they were promised harsh consequences.  Therefore we know that in God's eyes the Gentiles are not any less important or loved - for God so loved the WORLD...

(Romans 1:16-17)  For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith.”

(Romans 2:9-11)  There will be tribulation and distress for every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek, 10 but glory and honor and peace to everyone who does good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 11 For there is no partiality with God.

Even though the Israelites failed at being God's light to the world in the past, right from the beginning of time, God gave each person a conscience.  As well, through creation one can see and know that there is an eternal and loving God...

(Romans 1:18-20)  For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.

As we read on in Romans chapter one and two, we see the sins listed - which mankind (Jew or Gentile) already knows is wrong, but they choose to deceive themselves...

(Romans 2:12-16)  For all who have sinned without the Law will also perish without the Law, and all who have sinned under the Law will be judged by the Law; 13 for it is not the hearers of the Law who are just before God, but the doers of the Law will be justified. 14 For when Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves, 15 in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them, 16 on the day when, according to my gospel, God will judge the secrets of men through Christ Jesus.

There will be a day of judgment for all sinners (anyone who has not repented and not believed in Jesus)...

(Romans 2:4-6)  Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance? But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who will render to each person according to his deeds

We can now understand why apostle Paul began Romans the way he did.  This book is written to both the Jews and the Gentiles.  In these scripture portions, he lays out a heavy message to the Israelites...

(Romans 3:1-10)  Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision? Great in every respect. First of all, that they were entrusted with the oracles of God.  What then? If some did not believe, their unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God, will it? May it never be! Rather, let God be found true, though every man be found a liar, as it is written,
That You may be justified in Your wordsAnd prevail when You are judged.”
But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? The God who inflicts wrath is not unrighteous, is He? (I am speaking in human terms.) May it never be! For otherwise, how will God judge the world? But if through my lie the truth of God abounded to His glory, why am I also still being judged as a sinner? And why not say (as we are slanderously reported and as some claim that we say), “Let us do evil that good may come”? Their condemnation is just.
What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin; 10 as it is written,
There is none righteous, not even one..."

Paul continues his message to the Israelite that one is not saved by the Law or by physical circumcision.  God does not look at the external, but the internal.  Therefore when anyone is saved and sealed by the Holy Spirit - there is a circumcision of the heart.  This is the mark of the Church Age - the Age of Grace...

(Romans 2:17-29)  But if you bear the name “Jew” and rely upon the Law and boast in God, 18 and know His will and approve the things that are essential, being instructed out of the Law, 19 and are confident that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, 20 a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of the immature, having in the Law the embodiment of knowledge and of the truth, 21 you, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that one shall not steal, do you steal? 22 You who say that one should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? 23 You who boast in the Law, through your breaking the Law, do you dishonor God? 24 For “the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,” just as it is written.
25 For indeed circumcision is of value if you practice the Law; but if you are a transgressor of the Law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision. 26 So if the uncircumcised man keeps the requirements of the Law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision?27 And he who is physically uncircumcised, if he keeps the Law, will he not judge you who though having the letter of the Law and circumcision are a transgressor of the Law? 28 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh. 29 But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God.

Paul goes on to give a few examples, such as with Abraham and David - it doesn't matter which age one is in - it has always been about faith!...

(Romans 4:1-8)  What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due. But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness, just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
Blessed are those whose lawless deeds have been forgivenAnd whose sins have been covered.
Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will not take into account.”

Today's takeaway:  God is impartial!  And God is so awesome!  Because no one (Jew or Gentile) can perfectly live by the Law or work their way to heaven - Jesus has done it all - for us!  We are only saved by HIS work and by His grace!  And because of Jesus' righteousness, believers will not stand trial at the White Throne Judgment...

(Romans 3:21-31)  But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; 25 whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed; 26 for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
27 Where then is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith. 28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law. 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is He not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since indeed God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith is one.
31 Do we then nullify the Law through faith? May it never be! On the contrary, we establish the Law.
