eschatology, Jesus' Trial & Crucifixion (Mt.26-27, Lk.23, Jhn.18-19)

Jesus allowed Himself to be arrested, which fulfilled the prophecy from Zechariah 13:7...

(Matthew 26:55-56)  At that time Jesus said to the crowds, Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? Every day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me. 56 But all this has taken place to fulfill the Scriptures of the prophets.” Then all the disciples left Him and fled.

In Jewish culture, sons were considered to be equal to their fathers, so Jesus agreeing with the "accusation" that He was the Son of God - was the same as saying "I am God".  And remember, at least on one occasion, Jesus had told the people outright that He was "I AM".  And even while on trial, Jesus was preaching about His second coming and the Millennial kingdom...

(Matthew 26:57, 59-67)  Those who had seized Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together... 59 Now the chief priests and the whole Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death. 60 They did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on two came forward, 61 and said, “This man stated, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and to rebuild it in three days.’” 62 The high priest stood up and said to Him, “Do You not answer? What is it that these men are testifying against You?” 63 But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest said to Him, “I adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God.” 64 Jesus said to him, You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
65 Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy; 66 what do you think?” They answered, “He deserves death!” 67 Then they spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others slapped Him,

(John 18:33-39)  Therefore Pilate entered again into the Praetorium, and summoned Jesus and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” 34 Jesus answered, “Are you saying this on your own initiative, or did others tell you about Me?” 35 Pilate answered, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered You to me; what have You done?”36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm.” 37 Therefore Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truthEveryone who is of the truth hears My voice.” 38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, “I find no guilt in Him. 39 But you have a custom that I release someone for you at the Passover; do you wish then that I release for you the King of the Jews?”

The Israelites were so set on killing Jesus - because Jesus wasn't the Messiah that they wanted!  They wanted their Messiah to have victory over the Romans and set up the kingdom their way - so much so - that they actually wound up giving homage to the Roman king!  How hypocritical is that?  Even Pilate understood to some degree that the Israelites were blinded from the truth.

So as Jesus ALLOWED the following events to take place, several prophesies (which will be highlighted) were fulfilled (from Psalm 22, Isaiah 52-53, Zechariah 12).  These fulfilled prophecies are important for several reasons, one of them being that this demonstrates how God is in control of time and the "ages"...

(John 19:1-22)  Pilate then took Jesus and scourged Him. And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and put a purple robe on Him; and they began to come up to Him and say, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and to give Him slaps in the face. Pilate came out again and said to them, “Behold, I am bringing Him out to you so that you may know that I find no guilt in Him.” Jesus then came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold, the Man!” So when the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out saying, “Crucify, crucify!” Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no guilt in Him.” The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and by that law He ought to die because He made Himself out to be the Son of God.”
Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid; and he entered into the Praetorium again and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. 10 So Pilate said to Him, “You do not speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?” 11 Jesus answered, You would have no authority over Me, unless it had been given you from above; for this reason he who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.” 12 As a result of this Pilate made efforts to release Him, but the Jews cried out saying, “If you release this Man, you are no friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar.”
13 Therefore when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14 Now it was the day of preparation for the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, “Behold, your King!” 15 So they cried out, “Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”
16 So he then handed Him over to them to be crucified.
17 They took Jesus, therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross, to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha. 18 There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between. 19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It was written, “JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS.” 20 Therefore many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin and in Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews were saying to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews’; but that He said, ‘I am King of the Jews.’” 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”

(Luke 23:39)  One of the criminals who were hanged there was hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!”

(John 19:23-25a)  Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made four parts, a part to every soldier and also the tunic; now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece. 24 So they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be”; this was to fulfill the Scripture: “They divided My outer garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots.” 25 Therefore the soldiers did these things...
(Matthew 27:45-46)  Now from the sixth hour darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth hour. 46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

(John 19:28-37)  After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, I am thirsty.” 29 A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. 30 Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He saidIt is finished!” And He bowed His head and gave up His spirit.
31 Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first man and of the other who was crucified with Him; 33 but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. 35 And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe. 36 For these things came to pass to fulfill the Scripture, “Not a bone of Him shall be broken.”37 And again another Scripture says, “They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”

Today's takeaway:  in my discussion with the elderly gentlemen the other day, I mentioned that God was omnipresent.  He then challenged me saying, "If God is everywhere, then He is in everything!  How then do you explain evil?"  I told him that God is everywhere, but NOT in everything.  Especially - God is not in evil.  God does not indwell the soul of a nonbeliever.  God is good, and holy, and cannot have a relationship with sin or with evil.

I had often wondered why Jesus cried out that God had forsaken Him, while He was dying on the cross.  Now, with everything I know, I have come to explain it like this:  using the body of a man as the illustration - God being the body of the man to represent "everywhere" - Jesus being the hand of the same man to represent "coming to earth in flesh".  At the point when Jesus took on all the sins of the world of all time (past, present, future), God had to turn His head away from His hand and could not look.

I feel this must have been this biggest torment for Jesus.  I mean, I think back to some of the sins I have committed.  You know the kind - where you feel so sick to the stomach that you would prefer death, rather than facing the consequences.  Jesus even died for the sins of Hitler, and Manson, Osama bin Laden, and... Just imagine all of that "weight" and "sickness"...  and He did this for everyone, whether people accepted or rejected Him.  This is one thing that helps me appreciate God's love and everything He's done for me... how can I not respond?

(1 Peter 2:21-25)  For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, 22 who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; 23 and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24 and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. 25 For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.
