praying effectively: Do Not Believe Every Spirit (1John 4:1-6)

(1 John 4:1-6)  Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world. You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. They are from the world; therefore they speak as from the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God; he who knows God listens to ushe who is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

Reminder:  "praying effectively" involves knowing God's will.  When we pray in His will (in His name), He may choose to not answer those prayers in the time period that we would like, or HOW we would like - but He will answer those prayers!

It is God's will:
- that we do not believe every "spiritual thing" (4:1)
- that we test every "spiritual thing" to make sure it is from God (4:1)
- that we listen to and heed God's word because we know Him (4:6)

Today's prayer:

Dear Lord Jesus, thank You for Your guidance and strength.  Help us to be confident to live out Your will.  And give us insight and wisdom into things so that we can be sure whether or not something is from You.  Guide us in how we interpret and apply Your word in our lives so that we may remain steadfast and righteous.  All to Your glory, amen.
