(Matthew 5:9) “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
(Matthew 5:38-42) “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. 40 If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also. 41 Whoever forces you to go one mile, go with him two. 42 Give to him who asks of you, and do not turn away from him who wants to borrow from you.
(Luke 6:29-30) Whoever hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your coat, do not withhold your shirt from him either. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back."
Reminder: "praying effectively" involves knowing God's will. When we pray in His will (in His name), He may choose to not answer those prayers in the time period that we would like, or HOW we would like - but He will answer those prayers!
It is God's will:
- that we are peacemakers (Mt.5:9)
- that we do not resist an evil person (Mt.5:39)
- that we turn the other cheek, if someone should hit or slap us (Mt.5:39, Lk.6:29)
- that we give our shirt, if someone should take away our coat (Lk.6:29)
- that we give extra, if we are about to be sued (Mt.5:40)
- that we go an extra mile, if someone forces us to go one mile (Mt.5:41)
- that we give what is asked of us (Mt.5:42, Lk.6:30)
- that we lend to anyone what is asked of us (Mt.5:42)
- that we do not demand back what is taken from us (Lk.6:30)
Today's prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus, some of these requests are very difficult to hear, but You are holy and Your standards are unobtainable! This was the point You are making - that on our own - there is absolutely no way we could ever earn salvation or keep our salvation. We are not perfect. And You, being perfect, can only be reconciled to those who are perfect.
Thank You for providing the way, because all things are possible with You. All we have to do is choose You, and You change us from the inside out. Thank You that we can lean on You for all things and in all things. If and when any of these circumstances should arise, help us be obedient in what we should do and say, and give us the strength, courage and wisdom.
Many of these "asks" are about earthy treasures. If we love and trust You, then we should not worry over what we have here on earth. Help us trust You in all things. Amen.
