eschatology, Obedience Expected (Ex.16-19)

God brings the Israelites out of Egypt, demonstrating His mighty power and His lovingkindness, and then gives them an offer that they shouldn't want to refuse!  It's one of those no-brainers!  Let's see, the God of the universe just smote the Egyptians and saved me - and I literally walked out of there with newfound wealth - - - do I want to trust and serve Him???...

(Exodus 19:1-5)  In the third month after the sons of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, on that very day they came into the wilderness of Sinai.  When they set out from Rephidim, they came to the wilderness of Sinai and camped in the wilderness; and there Israel camped in front of the mountain. Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain, saying, “Thus you shall say to the house of Jacob and tell the sons of Israel: 4 You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings, and brought you to Myself. Now then, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be My own possession among all the peoples, for all the earth is Mine; and you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words that you shall speak to the sons of Israel.”

This is the same as being a Christian now.  For believers back then, "It was reckoned to them as righteousness."  (see Romans 4, Galatians 3:6, James 2:23)  Basically, Jesus' work on the cross was retroactive.  Perfect obedience is required to have a relationship with God who is holy and cannot be a part of sin.  But this is impossible for us.  God knew/knows this and took care of that for us.  All we have to do is believe.  Obedience is the evidence of our belief.  Slipping up and then getting back on track with God - evidence of our belief.  So God asks the Israelites to be obedient.  And when God asks us to do something, He is never vague. And being practical, all of the laws can be summed up into two...

(Matthew 22:34-40)  But when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered themselves together. 35 One of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the great and foremost commandment. 39 The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”

So God gave Moses the ten commandments to pass along to the people (Exodus 20:1-20).  As well, God got very specific, and gave instructions for every possible scenario imaginable.  THEN God explained the rewards - the perks - for living in obedience (you know, besides having peaceful and loving relationships with those around you, and having an awesome and loving relationship with God, Himself).  Remember, their ultimate "reward" was to have the Abrahamic covenant fulfilled (land, seed, blessings)...

(Exodus 23:20-33)  “Behold, I am going to send an angel before you to guard you along the way and to bring you into the place which I have prepared. 21 Be on your guard before him and obey his voice; do not be rebellious toward him, for he will not pardon your transgression, since My name is in him.  22 But if you truly obey his voice and do all that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries. 23 For My angel will go before you and bring you in to the land of the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hivites and the Jebusites; and I will completely destroy them. 24 You shall not worship their gods, nor serve them, nor do according to their deeds; but you shall utterly overthrow them and break their sacred pillars in pieces. 25 But you shall serve the Lord your God, and He will bless your bread and your water; and I will remove sickness from your midst. 26 There shall be no one miscarrying or barren in your land; I will fulfill the number of your days.  27 I will send My terror ahead of you, and throw into confusion all the people among whom you come, and I will make all your enemies turn their backs to you. 28 I will send hornets ahead of you so that they will drive out the Hivites, the Canaanites, and the Hittites before you. 29 I will not drive them out before you in a single year, that the land may not become desolate and the beasts of the field become too numerous for you. 30 I will drive them out before you little by little, until you become fruitful and take possession of the land. 31 I will fix your boundary from the Red Sea to the sea of the Philistines, and from the wilderness to the River Euphratesfor I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand, and you will drive them out before you. 32 You shall make no covenant with them or with their gods. 33 They shall not live in your land, because they will make you sin against Me; for if you serve their gods, it will surely be a snare to you.”

Today's takeaway:  I'm always perplexed at people's disdain towards Christianity, when they say, "It's all about do's and don't's," yet wherever you find mankind - you find rules and regulations.  Mankind loves to be in control, and to be in control requires setting up contracts and parameters.  AND when you look at world religions, they all require do's and don't's in order to reach some version of heaven.  Sadly, even some Christians believe that salvation must be partially earned through good works, and that then one MUST continue to do good works in order to keep one's salvation and God's love.  But God's love is not conditional.  God loves us!!!  And salvation is a gift based on faith...

(Galatians 3:19-29)  Why the Law then? It was added because of transgressions, having been ordained through angels by the agency of a mediator, until the seed would come to whom the promise had been made. 20 Now a mediator is not for one party only; whereas God is only one. 21 Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? May it never be! For if a law had been given which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law. 22 But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
23 But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed. 24 Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.  28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.  29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants, heirs according to promise.
