eschatology, Fifth Bowl: Darkness (Rev.16:10-11)

The fifth bowl of God's wrath is released upon the earth.  This judgment will be darkness, which will cause all their aches and pains from previous judgments to feel all the worse...

(Revelation 16:10-11)  Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom became darkened; and they gnawed their tongues because of pain, 11 and they blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores; and they did not repent of their deeds.

Today's takeaway:  I know at nighttime, certain things can certainly seem worse, for just like a blind person, all of your other senses are then heightened..  As well, there is a definite vulnerability in not being able to see ahead of you.  Even for those times I need my reading glasses - I feel vulnerable enough!!!  But not being able to see at all is a whole other thing.

Some people prefer not to know what lies ahead of them, or what lies in wait.  Ignorance can seem like bliss.  Sometimes it might be a good thing;  like not knowing your grownup child is on a hiking trip but thinking that they are just at home for the weekend... reading.  lol.  But seriously, instead of staying obvious as a coping strategy, we should put into practice not worrying - and instead - trusting God to look after our children and others, just as we trust in God to look after ourselves.

But back to being unable to see.  As I get older, I'm definitely turning on lights as I walk into dark rooms, no matter how familiar, because I don't want to trip over anything and hurt myself.  It's the same thing for going through life.  We should know that God is Light - enabling us to see and know and not be afraid - so we can live securely and confidently in His presence - while shining the Light of Jesus out to those around us...

(John 1:1-14)  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to testify about the Light, so that all might believe through him. He was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.
There was the true Light which, coming into the world, enlightens every man. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him. 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

(John 8:12)  Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”

(Ephesians 5:6-14)  Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not be partakers with them; for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), 10 trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; 12 for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. 13 But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light. 14 For this reason it says,
Awake, sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

(Matthew 5:14-16)  “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven..."
