Physically, angels are asexual, so they do not marry...
(Mark 12:18-25) Some Sadducees (who say that there is no resurrection) came to Jesus, and began questioning Him, saying, 19 “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves behind a wife and leaves no child, his brother should marry the wife and raise up children to his brother. 20 There were seven brothers; and the first took a wife, and died leaving no children. 21 The second one married her, and died leaving behind no children; and the third likewise; 22 and so all seven left no children. Last of all the woman died also. 23 In the resurrection, when they rise again, which one’s wife will she be? For all seven had married her.” 24 Jesus said to them, “Is this not the reason you are mistaken, that you do not understand the Scriptures or the power of God? 25 For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven..."
Luke puts it in a slightly different way...
(Luke 20:35-36) ...those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; 36 for they cannot even die anymore, because they are like angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.
Jesus also mentions the emotional attributes of angels, which lets us know that they are able to experience and express various feelings...
(Luke 15:8-10) “Or what woman, if she has ten silver coins and loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? 9 When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin which I had lost!’ 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
From this we see:
- angels (were created but) cannot die (Luke 20:36)
- angels are asexual, neither male nor female, so they do not marry (Matthew 22:30, Mark 12:25, Luke 20:35-36)
- angels are able to experience and express emotions, such as joy whenever someone becomes a believer (Luke 15:10)
- when believers go to heaven, they will receive glorified bodies, which will be similar to, or exactly like the bodies of the angels (Matthew 22:30, Mark 12:25, Luke 20:35-36)
Personal experience: since there will not be any sex in heaven, I've heard enough times that people want to experience sex before they die. So they use this as a justification for having sex outside of marriage. Or, they rush into marriage for the wrong reasons.
To anyone who brings up this topic, I now will explain that if one would die, having never experienced sex, they should not feel like they are missing out on anything - BECAUSE - whatever we get to experience in heaven will be so much, much, much more than that!!! - there will be no comparison!
Now, sex (within marriage) is awesome!!! Of course!!! When God created everything, each day He would look over what He had just made and would say, "It is good." But after creating man...
(Genesis 2:18) Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.”
So after God created both man and woman..
(Genesis 1:26-31) Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the [sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29 Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you; 30 and to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to every thing that moves on the earth which has life, I have given every green plant for food”; and it was so. 31 God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
It is not sacrilegious to explain it this way... God created the purity of the marital union, (I believe) giving us a little "taste of heaven". And God uses this earthly example to explain the spiritual "marriage" of believers with Jesus. Here is just one scriptural reference to support that...
(Revelation 19:17) “Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready.”
Today's takeaway: there will not be any need for sex in heaven! We will be with Jesus, and for all eternity, we will dwell in perfect harmony and experience such an exhilarated joy, which we cannot even possibly imagine right now...
(Psalm 16:11) You will make known to me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forever.
(1 Peter 1:2-9) according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours in the fullest measure.
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, 7 so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 8 and though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, 9 obtaining as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls.
