spiritual battle, God's Army (2 Kings 6)

King Aram kept trying to plan random raids on Israel, but the prophet Elisha kept warning the king of Israel about them.  Being thwarted several times, King Aram decided it would be a good idea to cappure Elisha...

(2 Kings 6:8-14)  Now the king of Aram was warring against Israel; and he counseled with his servants saying, “In such and such a place shall be my camp.” The man of God sent word to the king of Israel saying, “Beware that you do not pass this place, for the Arameans are coming down there.” 10 The king of Israel sent to the place about which the man of God had told him; thus he warned him, so that he guarded himself there, more than once or twice.
11 Now the heart of the king of Aram was enraged over this thing; and he called his servants and said to them, “Will you tell me which of us is for the king of Israel?” 12 One of his servants said, “No, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom.” 13 So he said, “Go and see where he is, that I may send and take him.” And it was told him, saying, “Behold, he is in Dothan.” 14 He sent horses and chariots and a great army there, and they came by night and surrounded the city.

Protected by God's army, Elisha prayed that his servant would be able to see in order that he would not fear the enemy.  Then he prayed that the enemy would be struck with blindness...

(2 Kings 6:15-19)  Now when the attendant of the man of God had risen early and gone out, behold, an army with horses and chariots was circling the city. And his servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” 16 So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” 17 Then Elisha prayed and said, “Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” And the Lord opened the servant’s eyes and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. 18 When they came down to him, Elisha prayed to the Lord and said, “Strike this people with blindness, I pray.” So He struck them with blindness according to the word of Elisha. 19 Then Elisha said to them, “This is not the way, nor is this the city; follow me and I will bring you to the man whom you seek.” And he brought them to Samaria.

The purpose of asking God to blind the Armeans, bring them into Samaria, and then have their eyes opened again - was to make them "see" the mighty power of God...

(2 Kings 6:20-23)  When they had come into Samaria, Elisha said, “O Lord, open the eyes of these men, that they may see.” So the Lord opened their eyes and they saw; and behold, they were in the midst of Samaria. 21 Then the king of Israel when he saw them, said to Elisha, “My father, shall I kill them? Shall I kill them?” 22 He [j]answered, “You shall not kill them. Would you kill those you have taken captive with your sword and with your bow? Set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink and go to their master.” 23 So he prepared a great feast for them; and when they had eaten and drunk he sent them away, and they went to their master. And the marauding bands of Arameans did not come again into the land of Israel.

From this we see:
- not only is God all-powerful, but He has an immense heavenly army
- at any point in time, we really have no idea what is all surrounding us
- most people do not see, hear or sense the spiritual realm, and even those who do or have, will not be seeing, hearing or sensing everything of the spiritual realm al the time

Personal experience:  there have been times when I have sensed a presence while my husband was right there beside me, but he did not sense a thing.  I do not ask to see, hear or sense things, and I have never asked for that.  That would be treading on some very dark and dangerous territory - even if one would request to see angels.  What would be the motive and purpose behind that?

Today's takeaway:  our desire should be to "see", "hear" and sense God's presence!  Our desire should be that the Holy Spirit would work in us and through us.  Our desire should be to get closer and closer to Jesus in order to be more Christ-like.

The more we know abut God, and the more we KNOW God, the less likely we will get caught up or carried away in a religion or cult.  God and the Bible is the final authority!...

(Hebrews 4:12-16)  For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.
14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. 16 Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

(Romans 12:1-2)  Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

(2 Peter 3:14-18)  Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless, 15 and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, 16 as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction. 17 You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of unprincipled men and fall from your own steadfastness, 18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus ChristTo Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
